On Monday, 14 April 2014, at 2 p.m. the IPCC will present key findings of its Fifths Assessment Report on the mitigation of climate change at the Technical University Berlin. The event is hosted jointly by the Technical University Berlin and the Mercator Foundation.

Following almost four years of intense collaboration between hundreds of scientists around the world, the IPCC presents the current state of knowledge about options for mitigating climate change. From April 07 to April 12, the member governments of the IPCC gather in Berlin to approve the Summary for Policymakers of the Working Group III contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report and to accept the underlying assessment. The launch event at the TU Berlin marks the first public presentation of this report.

Distinguished speakers include:
Sigmar Gabriel, Deputy Federal Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy
Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the IPCC
Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Co-Chair of Working Group III of the IPCC
Prof. Dr. Chris Field, Co-Chair of Working Group II of the IPCC

Established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) the IPCC is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. IPCC assessments provide essential input to the ongoing negotiation process under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

As the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel is in a unique position to provide an insight into German climate and energy policy. He joins this event to provide his perspective on German policy in the international context.

Rajendra Pachauri will provide a brief scoping view of the AR5 in its entirety – the contributions from all three Working Groups and an outlook to the yet to be finalized Synthesis Report.

Ottmar Edenhofer will present an overview of the Working Group III contribution and highlight its key findings about the mitigation of climate change. The WGIII report assesses options for mitigating climate change and their underlying technological, economic and institutional requirements. It lays out risks, uncertainty and ethical foundations of climate change mitigation policies on the global, national and sub-national level and it investigates mitigation measures for all major sectors as well as investment and finance issues.

Chris Field’s presentation of the Working Group II contribution on climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability complements the portfolio of ‘Climate Solutions’. In Berlin, the IPCC Working Groups II and III join for the first time.

The TU launch event premieres the presentation of scientific expertise covering both adaptation and mitigation. As such, it provides a unique opportunity to get encompassing insight into the state of knowledge in Climate Solutions.

The event will be held in English.
